Who We Are: Sepultura, Heavy Metal from Belo Horizonte

· The Band

We're Sepultura, a heavy metal band from Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Here's where we started, where our name comes from, and the sound we've been making since 1984.

Where did we start?

In Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais, in 1984. Brothers Max and Igor Cavalera founded the band there, and two years later our first album, Morbid Visions, came out.

What does "Sepultura" mean?

The word: sepultura is Portuguese for "grave".

The source: Max chose it while translating the lyrics of Motörhead's "Dancing on Your Grave". A Portuguese name for a Brazilian band, and it stuck.

What kind of metal do we play?

The mix: groove metal, thrash metal and death metal.

Later on: alternative metal influences found their way in too.

One thread: it's always heavy, and it's always Sepultura.

Who is in the band today?

Derrick Green on vocals, since 1997.

Andreas Kisser on guitar, since 1987.

Paulo Jr. on bass, with us since our founding era.

Greyson Nekrutman on drums, since 2024.

How many albums have we made?

Fifteen studio albums, from Morbid Visions in 1986 to Quadra in 2020, with Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains, Arise, Chaos A.D. and Roots along the way.

Where does the merch come in?

This store is where our designs live: four decades of Sepultura, on tees, long sleeves, crewnecks and hoodies, with kids' and youth sizes too.
